Why this phrase
“God is love” comes from the First Letter of John (4:8 and 4:16), one of the shortest and most quoted lines in the New Testament. It doesn’t say God is loving, as if love were one quality among many; it says love is the very nature of the sacred. And it follows with a practical point: whoever lives in love lives in God.
That’s why we painted it as an open hand rather than a pointing finger. The hand isn’t grabbing the heart, it is offering or receiving it, and the reflection in the water doubles everything, as if love given comes back to you. Whether you read the words in church on Sunday or simply as a reminder to be kind on a Tuesday, the message is the same: begin with love.
We also like that the painting holds a little stillness. Mountains, water and evening light are where many people go to pray or simply breathe, so the artwork carries a sense of calm even before you read the words.
